Geophysical inversion using petrophysical constraints

چکیده
Petrophysical information is sometimes available from well logs, laboratory measurements, etc. It has been shown that incorporation of such information into geophysical inversions can greatly improve the recovered models. However, when the known petrophysical information is not applicable throughout the entire region, the application of petrophysical constraints to geophysical inversions could seriously distort the resulting models. In this study, we propose a new inversion algorithm that is capable of building the petrophysical information into the inversion, while overcoming the aforementioned problem. The lithology differentiation is accomplished by applying fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm to the models inverted from this new method. We illustrate this method with a synthetic crosshole seismic example and a gravity survey that measures both surface and borehole gravity response.

Joint inversion of seismic traveltimes and gravity data using petrophysical constraints with application to lithology differentiation
Joint inversion of different geophysical data sets has recently received considerable attention. Different geophysical methods are sensitive to different physical properties and their variations on different scales, and joint inversion provides a way to combine these complementary information contained in each data set by integrating all the geophysical data into a single inversion scheme. The ...

[1] Geophysical imaging has traditionally provided qualitative information about geologic structure; however, there is increasing interest in using petrophysical models to convert tomograms to quantitative estimates of hydrogeologic, mechanical, or geochemical parameters of interest (e.g., permeability, porosity, water content, and salinity). Unfortunately, petrophysical estimation based on tom...
متن کاملImproved extraction of hydrologic information from geophysical data through coupled hydrogeophysical inversion
[1] There is increasing interest in the use of multiple measurement types, including indirect (geophysical) methods, to constrain hydrologic interpretations. To date, most examples integrating geophysical measurements in hydrology have followed a three‐step, uncoupled inverse approach. This approach begins with independent geophysical inversion to infer the spatial and/or temporal distribution ...
متن کاملTheory and Application of Joint Interpretation of Multimethod Geophysical Data
This work is devoted to the theory of joint interpretation of multimethod geophysical data and its application to the solution of real geophysical inverse problems. The targets of such joint interpretation can be geological bodies with an established dependence between various physical properties that cause anomalies in several geophysical fields (geophysical multiresponse). The establishing of...

[1] Direct estimation of groundwater solute concentrations from geophysical tomograms has been only moderately successful because (1) reconstructed tomograms are often highly uncertain and subject to inversion artifacts, (2) the range of subsurface conditions represented in data sets is incomplete because of the paucity of colocated well or core data and aquifer heterogeneity, and (3) geophysic...
